For the reader who…
“believes that together we can build a better future for all earthlings.”
Years in business: 4
Fun fact: All of our bookmarks are printed with this quote from Mary Oliver's Upstream: “So it comes first: the world. Then, literature. And then, what one pencil moving over a thousand miles of paper can (perhaps, sometimes) do.” This quote speaks to our shop's motto, “where nature, books, & creativity meet,” and emphasizes the interconnectedness of art, nature, and community and the importance of all three things in building a more just future.
Explore our community: Madison has so many wonderful things to offer! Other than The Chatham Bookseller, also on the crawl, you can visit Dewey's Comic City which is on Madison's very own literary row (aka right between the two bookstores!). There are also so many wonderful coffee shops, particularly Sunday Motor Co. and Bakehouse by Joe Murphy. We'd also highly recommend our favorite gift shop in town, The Sunroom, filled with the most beautiful gift items and vintage finds, and just a few minutes walk away from our shop.
Stay connected: We have a newsletter that you can subscribe to here.
“The Nature of Reading is an environmental bookshop which opened on Earth Day in 2022. It is a specialized bookstore that focuses on nature writing, eco-fiction, seasonal reading, and climate change books, pulling together the joy and wonder of the natural world with the knowledge and passion to fight for its survival. As the natural world edges closer and closer into our daily lives, we seek to demonstrate the beauty and harmony between ourselves and nature (which is to say, amongst ourselves) and to spread awareness of the climate crisis, turning the lessons of literature into action.”

We’re looking forward to the crawl because…
“we loved seeing readers from all over the state for last year's crawl, and we can't wait to welcome even more readers to the store this year! It was so wonderful to see people come in not knowing about our store's specialty but leaving with piles of nature-themed books. This year we're excited to have even more lovely gift items on offer, including fair-trade felted items, stationery, mugs, socks, and so much more.”
